Penang is enhancing ties with Latin America as semiconductor supply chains shift. At the Latin America-Malaysia Semiconductor and Electronics Industry Opportunities Forum, Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin emphasized the potential for a dual-hub supply chain.
Malaysia holds 13% of the global OSAT market and attracts investments due to its stability and logistics. Representatives from the US, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Colombia attended the forum to discuss collaboration.
Mexico is becoming a nearshoring hub, while Brazil and Costa Rica provide essential strengths for semiconductor manufacturing. Challenges such as logistics costs and talent shortages were also addressed, with calls for stronger government cooperation.
