Penang to Host Malaysia's First Remote Digital Virtual Tower at PIA
Penang International Airport will feature Malaysia's first remote digital virtual tower (RDVT), set to provide live flight feeds to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. The RM107 million project, with 16 cameras, is expected to be operational by mid-April. The second phase of airport expansion will be completed by mid-2027, including new apron facilities. In 2024, PIA handled 120,000 metric tonnes of cargo, increasing to 145,000 metric tonnes in 2025, solidifying its role as a logistics hub for the semiconductor industry.

Penang International Airport (PIA) is set to host Malaysia's first remote digital virtual tower (RDVT), which will enhance traffic control with 16 cameras providing live feeds to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) facility at KLIA. The RM107 million project is expected to be operational by mid-April.
The second phase of airport expansion, involving apron facilities, is slated for completion by mid-2027, with a new domestic terminal and refurbishment of the international terminal in the tender process. In 2024, PIA handled 120,000 metric tonnes of cargo, rising to 145,000 in 2025, establishing PIA as a critical logistics hub for the global semiconductor industry.
