Petrobras Launches Brazil's First 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel with Market Expansion Plans by 2027
Petrobras has delivered 3,000 m³ of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced entirely in Brazil, marking a significant milestone in the aviation fuel sector. The company plans to invest R$ 17.5 billion to scale production and meet future regulatory requirements, positioning itself as a global leader in the SAF market by 2027.

Petrobras has commenced commercial operations of its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), delivering 3,000 m³ to Galeão International Airport, which corresponds to a full day's aviation fuel consumption in the region. The SAF is derived from Brazilian soybean oil and processed at the Duque de Caxias refinery, with plans to produce 1.6 billion liters annually by 2027 through additional refineries in Paulínia and Betim.
The Brazilian government aims for 100% of national SAF demand to be met through domestic production by 2029, with investments totaling R$ 17.5 billion expected in the sector. The implementation of the Fuel of the Future Law in 2027 will require airlines to use at least 1% biocombustible in domestic flights, increasing to 10% by 2037. While the initiative presents significant opportunities for Brazil, challenges include scaling production rapidly and addressing potential conflicts with food supply demands globally.
