Phoenix Sells Hydrogen Bus Due to Lack of Fuel Infrastructure
Phoenix is selling its hydrogen bus, purchased in 2024 for $1.5 million, due to the absence of hydrogen fuel providers. The city had originally planned to acquire six hydrogen buses but was limited to one due to infrastructure challenges.

The City of Phoenix is moving forward with the sale of its hydrogen-fueled bus, acquired in 2024 for $1.5 million, after failing to establish hydrogen fuel infrastructure. Initially, Phoenix intended to buy six hydrogen buses as part of a transition to zero-emissions transportation, funded by a federal grant of $16,362,600 under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
However, without hydrogen fuel providers, the city could not maintain the bus, leading to its sale. The Phoenix City Council has approved the sale, with interest expressed from Santa Clara, California. The situation underscores significant infrastructure challenges that could impede the adoption of hydrogen fuel technology in public transit.
