Piscataway Bioenergy Project Converts Biosolids to Renewable Natural Gas for Montgomery County Buses
The $271 million Piscataway Bioenergy Project in Accokeek, Maryland, processes biosolids from wastewater treatment to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) for Montgomery County's Ride On bus system. Opened in October 2024, the facility utilizes anaerobic digestion to capture methane gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions for nearly 2 million residents. A contract with Montgomery County allows for the purchase of RNG, aligning with the county's Zero Emission Bus Transition Plan aimed at achieving zero emissions by 2035.

The Piscataway Bioenergy Project, a $271 million facility in Accokeek, Maryland, converts biosolids from wastewater treatment into renewable natural gas (RNG) for Montgomery County's Ride On public bus system. Opened in October 2024, the facility utilizes anaerobic digestion to capture methane gas, benefiting nearly 2 million residents in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.
A five-year contract with Montgomery County enables the purchase of RNG, supporting the county's goal of achieving zero emissions by 2035. The project also aims to market Class A biosolids as soil additives. The implementation of anaerobic digestion is part of Maryland's climate pollution reduction plan.
