POET Biorefining Faces Legal Challenge Over Carbon Capture Project in Wabash County, Indiana
Indiana's ethanol industry leaders advocate for carbon capture and storage (CCS) to enhance economic growth, despite a federal lawsuit by POET Biorefining against Wabash County's indefinite moratorium on CCS. Ethanol plants significantly impact local corn prices and support thousands of jobs. The lawsuit aims to allow CCS development, highlighting regulatory support for carbon capture technology. However, local opposition persists due to safety and environmental concerns.

The Indiana ethanol industry is pushing for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects to boost economic growth amid a legal dispute in Wabash County. POET Biorefining has filed a federal lawsuit against the Wabash County Commissioners, challenging an indefinite moratorium on CCS as contrary to state and federal law.
Ethanol facilities, which process about half of Indiana's corn, support 35,000 jobs and could increase corn prices by 15 to 25 cents per bushel with CCS. The proposed project does not involve pipelines, addressing local safety concerns. As the lawsuit progresses, the ethanol sector aims to clarify CCS benefits to the community.
