Portland Council Proposes Distribution of $56 Million in Housing Funds
Portland City Council is evaluating a plan to allocate over $56 million in unspent housing funds for various programs aimed at preventing homelessness and supporting affordable housing. The proposal includes significant investments in rent assistance and eviction defense services, with a goal to distribute the funds by July of this fiscal year.

Portland City Council is assessing a proposal to allocate more than $56 million discovered in housing accounts. The funds will support programs such as rent assistance ($9 million) and eviction defense services (around $2 million), addressing rising homelessness rates, where 1,400 individuals become homeless monthly despite rehousing efforts for 1,000.
The amendment, sponsored by Councilor Candace Avalos, aims for distribution before the end of the fiscal year in July. Concerns remain regarding allocations to the general fund and specific projects, as advocates stress the need for focused investment in affordable housing to effectively address housing costs.
