A study confirms that using thermal energy from Ammersee can fully meet the annual heating demand of lakeside communities. This shift could reduce reliance on fossil fuels and stabilize energy costs, especially amid rising oil and gas prices.

The study indicates that lakeside communities around Ammersee can potentially utilize lake thermal energy to meet their annual heating requirement of 277 GWh. The thermal energy extraction would minimally cool the lake, maintaining its temperature year-round.
While costs relative to other energy sources like geothermal remain uncertain, estimates suggest lake thermal energy may be cheaper. The establishment of a heat network could be a limiting factor, requiring a 40% initial connection rate and restricted expansion beyond one kilometer from the shore.
The western shore is particularly suitable for this initiative, with accessible thermal energy at depths of 20 meters. Future steps include feasibility studies and municipal heating planning.
