President Prabowo Subianto to Inaugurate Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant II in South Sumatra
In a significant development for Indonesia's renewable energy sector, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto is set to inaugurate the Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant Unit II, located in Muara Enim, South Sumatra. This facility, boasting a capacity of 55 megawatts, has been operational since June 30, 2025, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to harnessing geothermal energy as a clean power source.
The anticipated inauguration is poised to take place by the end of this month or, at the latest, next month, according to Bahlil, who made the announcement during the Indonesia International Geothermal Convention and Exhibition held in Jakarta. The plant, managed by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), has exceeded its capacity expectations, generating approximately 56 megawatts of electricity, a testament to its operational prowess.
As part of a broader initiative to bolster Indonesia's clean energy supply, PGE's President Director, Julfi Hadi, emphasized that the operational status of Lumut Balai Unit II marks a pivotal step in the company’s long-term strategy to provide sustainable geothermal energy. This development aligns with PGE's ambitious goal of achieving an independent installed capacity of 1 gigawatt within the next two to three years, which will facilitate the country's target of sourcing 76 percent of its energy from renewable resources from 2025 to 2034.
Furthermore, PGE is advancing other projects, including the development of the 110-megawatt Hululais Unit 1 and 2 in Bengkulu, a cogeneration project with a total capacity of 230 megawatts, as well as new field explorations for the 55-megawatt Gunung Tiga plant in Lampung. With an installed capacity of 727.5 megawatts across six operational areas, PGE currently oversees about 70 percent of Indonesia's total geothermal capacity, which stands at 1,932.5 megawatts across fifteen geothermal working areas. This robust framework positions PGE at the forefront of the nation’s renewable energy transformation.
