Princess Isabella of Denmark to Join Military Service in August 2026
Princess Isabella will begin her military training at age 18, marking a cultural shift in Denmark's conscription policies. This change comes amid rising global tensions and aims to bolster the nation's defense capabilities.

Princess Isabella, the 18-year-old daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik X, will commence her military service in August 2026 at the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse. This marks a significant shift in Denmark's conscription laws, which have historically applied only to men, as all 18-year-old women are now required to register for potential service as of July 2025.
The duration of service has also been extended from four months to 11 months to enhance military readiness. Experts cite growing global instability, including rising tensions with Russia and geopolitical issues involving the U.S., as key factors for these reforms.
The new model may result in up to 6,500 recruits annually by 2033, reflecting a broader cultural acceptance of military service among women in Denmark. This initiative aligns the monarchy with national defense priorities, potentially setting a precedent for royal family involvement in military service.
