Proposed 50-Metre Shed for 20,000 Chickens at North Yorkshire Farm
Plans for a 50-metre building to house 20,000 chickens at Cansdale Farm aim to enhance poultry welfare without increasing bird numbers. The project aligns with the Better Chicken Commitment standards, necessitating lower stocking densities.

Cansdale Farm in Hunmanby plans to construct a 50-metre shed for 20,000 chickens, pending approval from North Yorkshire Council. The proposal redistributes existing birds to meet Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) standards, which impose a maximum stocking density of 30kg/m², a reduction from the UK legal limit of 38kg/m².
The new building will feature a gross internal area of about 1,559m², with high-velocity ventilation and automated systems for temperature and feeding management. The plan ensures no increase in ammonia emissions or vehicle movements. The local council has yet to decide on the proposal, which is currently open for public representations.
