Proposed Rule Change Aims to Open Data Access in Australia's National Energy Market
A proposed rule change by the Australian Energy Market Commission aims to transition data in the National Energy Market from confidential to open access, as advocated by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and DigSilent. The initiative seeks to alleviate grid congestion and enhance project placement by providing public access to critical data, such as geographic information and load forecasts, through an AEMO-administered portal. This shift would enable improved data quality and foster innovative modeling approaches, although it may challenge AEMO's current staffing capabilities.

A rule change request to the Australian Energy Market Commission seeks to make data in the National Energy Market accessible to a wider audience, moving from confidential to open by default. Advocated by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and DigSilent, the proposal aims to alleviate grid congestion and improve project placement.
Currently, critical information gaps hinder efficient investment and connection due to the confidentiality of basic data. The proposed changes would allow public access to data such as geographic information, transmission limits, and load forecasts via an AEMO-administered portal.
This initiative intends to improve data quality and promote innovative modeling approaches by involving academics and researchers. AEMO's role would shift from data custodian to curator, which poses challenges given its current staffing limitations.
