PUC Launches $190M Transmission Line Project to Support Algoma Steel
PUC Transmission is set to begin construction on a $190 million transmission line and transformer station in Q2 2026. This project will enhance power supply for Algoma Steel's electric arc furnace, enabling a doubling of its production capacity.

Construction on a new $190 million transmission line and transformer station by PUC Transmission is anticipated to start in the second quarter of 2026. This infrastructure will supply approximately 300 megawatts of power to Algoma Steel's electric arc furnace project, facilitating a significant increase in steelmaking capacity.
Currently, site preparation for this 230-kilovolt project is underway, with 50 temporary jobs already created, and an additional 10 permanent positions expected post-completion. PUC aims to finalize construction by the second quarter of 2028, with community engagement planned through further open houses. Potential concerns include local residents' worries about property value and flickering lights, although PUC clarified this issue is unrelated to their distribution system.
