Puget Sound Energy Launches Washington's First Vehicle-to-Home Pilot with Ford and Kia
Puget Sound Energy has initiated a vehicle-to-home pilot project in Washington, partnering with Ford, Kia, Wallbox, and ChargeScape. The project tests bidirectional EV charging, allowing EV owners to use their vehicle batteries for home backup power and grid stability. The demonstration will run through Q1 2027, involving three Ford F-150 Lightning and two Kia EV9 vehicles, focusing on time-of-use optimization and demand response. The utility aims to enhance its clean energy efforts and expand its bidirectional charging program as technology evolves.

Puget Sound Energy began a vehicle-to-home pilot in March 2026, marking Washington state's first bidirectional EV charging test. The utility collaborates with Ford, Kia, Wallbox, and ChargeScape, enabling EV owners to use vehicle batteries for home power and grid support during peak demand.
The pilot includes three Ford F-150 Lightning and two Kia EV9 vehicles and will last until Q1 2027. It aims to optimize charging costs and stabilize the grid. Puget Sound Energy is also pursuing partnerships to enhance its clean energy initiatives, including a recent agreement for a 200 MW battery facility to mitigate grid congestion. Washington's ambitious EV adoption framework aims for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.
