RAF Upper Heyford Development Plans Threaten Historical Integrity
The £5 billion redevelopment at RAF Upper Heyford proposes 9,000 homes, raising concerns over the site's historical structures. The plans, if approved, could alter the character of this significant brownfield site, previously a major US Air Force base.

Plans for a £5 billion residential project at RAF Upper Heyford include 9,000 new homes, with 2,700 designated as affordable. This redevelopment threatens the site's historical character, which features 56 aircraft hangars and structures classified as scheduled monuments.
The site, formerly a US Air Force base until 1994, hosted over 10,000 American personnel during the Cold War. Additionally, the reinstated Portway right of way has caused division of the runway, raising concerns.
Guided tours are currently offered at the decaying site, which now stores electric vehicles and has repurposed structures for commercial use. The implications of the redevelopment may lead to a loss of historical significance amid increasing housing demands.
