RCN Enhances Orca-Class Vessels with Small Arms Capability
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has introduced small arms capabilities on Orca-class vessels to enhance naval readiness and training. This initiative reflects a strategic shift towards operational preparedness amidst evolving maritime security challenges.

On April 22, the Royal Canadian Navy conducted a live-fire exercise aboard the Orca-class Patrol Craft Training vessel Cougar, marking the introduction of small-arms capabilities including C8 and C22 rifles, and a C6 machine gun. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance operational readiness and training for sailors, bridging the gap between training and operational environments.
The training process involved extensive safety preparations and formal range qualifications, ensuring a structured approach to onboard weapon procedures. Conducting live-fire at sea introduces complexities such as environmental conditions and the presence of other vessels, necessitating rigorous safety protocols. This advancement is critical as the RCN adapts to modern maritime demands.
