ReKlär Project Aims for Low-Emission Sewage Sludge Treatment
The ReKlär project, backed by a 1.9 million EUR budget from the Saxon Development Bank, seeks to develop a cost-effective system for treating sewage sludge in small to medium-sized municipal wastewater plants. This initiative addresses the need for resource-efficient waste recovery and energy self-sufficiency by 2040.

The ReKlär project is focused on creating a homogeneous, storable fuel from dewatered sewage sludge and a specialized burner system for low-emission thermal recovery. This integrated solution targets wastewater treatment plants serving up to 50,000 population equivalents, particularly those not utilizing biogas.
The initiative is projected to provide environmental benefits by reducing emissions and optimizing resource use while also offering economic advantages through effective heat utilization and reduced transportation and disposal costs. The project aims to contribute to energy self-sufficiency goals by 2040. The Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) is involved in characterizing sewage sludge and evaluating compliance with standards, while regional partners bring expertise in fuel technology and process engineering.
