Research Highlights Drone Technology in Locating Orphan Oil and Gas Wells in Pennsylvania
New research reveals that drone and ground-based surveys can effectively identify undocumented orphan wells in Pennsylvania, potentially numbering up to 300,000. This technological approach could significantly enhance efforts to address environmental concerns associated with abandoned wells.

A study led by Jade Boutot from McGill University, sponsored by the Environmental Defense Fund, examined the use of drones and other technologies to locate undocumented orphan oil and gas wells in Pennsylvania. The research utilized drone magnetometer surveys, methane detection, and ground validation to uncover wells that may not be reflected in historical records.
Pennsylvania has a long history of oil and gas extraction, leading to an estimated 30,000 documented and up to 300,000 undocumented orphan wells. The integration of advanced detection methods aims to improve the efficiency of identifying these environmental hazards. As states work to manage orphaned wells, the findings underscore the importance of modern technology in locating and addressing these risks.
