Rheinmetall Set to Secure Laser Weapon Contract Amid Military Procurement Approvals
German lawmakers are set to approve a laser weapon contract with Rheinmetall AG worth up to €462 million. This approval is part of a larger military procurement initiative exceeding €12 billion, which includes other significant contracts.

The German government plans to approve military procurement deals exceeding €12 billion, including a €462 million laser weapon contract with Rheinmetall AG. This laser system, developed with MBDA Deutschland, targets small aerial threats like drones on frigate-sized vessels and is expected to be operational by 2029.
The German Navy's capacity to support such systems is under scrutiny, especially following the cancellation of the F126 frigate program, which Rheinmetall aimed to lead. Additionally, the procurement includes up to eight MEKO A-200 frigates from TKMS AG & Co.
