Rural Electrification Fund Targets Enhanced Household Energy Access in Zimbabwe
The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) aims to boost household electricity uptake in rural Zimbabwe, despite existing subsidies. Collaboration with community leaders is critical to overcoming barriers to energy access.

The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) is focusing on increasing electricity connections for rural households in Zimbabwe, despite low uptake rates. Mrs. Cecilia Chitiyo, Acting Board Chairperson, emphasized the need for collaboration with local leaders during the launch of the Majindane Electrification Project.
Although progress has been made in electrifying public institutions and businesses, household connections remain insufficient. REF, established in 2002, seeks to expand access through grid and off-grid solutions, including solar and biogas technologies, aiming to support the National Development Strategy 2. Continued low uptake poses risks to rural development goals and the vision for an empowered upper middle-income society by 2030.
