SA Defence Minister Details Charter Process for Deputy President's Japan Trip
Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed proper procedures were followed in chartering a flight for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's trip to Japan, due to unavailability of SAAF aircraft. The charter was executed under the RT-61 National Treasury contract, aimed at expediting such processes.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) was unable to provide suitable aircraft for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's trip to Japan, leading to a charter through the RT-61 National Treasury contract. The SAAF was constrained by maintenance issues affecting its Boeing 737 (BBJ) and Falcon 900 aircraft, which did not meet the requirements for passenger capacity and fuel stops.
ExecuJet was chartered after the first company on the list failed to meet criteria. The flight was registered with Westdawn Investments, linked to the Gupta family. Minister Maphisa-Nqakula emphasized adherence to established procedures and the need for a capable SAAF fleet to meet future requirements.
