Safe Bulkers CEO Highlights Challenges in Shipping's Decarbonisation Efforts
Shipping's transition to low- and zero-emission fuels faces major execution challenges despite available technologies. Key factors include regulatory uncertainty, high costs, and geopolitical tensions that hinder investment and implementation.

The chief executive of Safe Bulkers, Polys Hajioannou, emphasizes that the primary hurdle in shipping's decarbonisation is not the availability of low-emission fuels but rather the execution of these solutions at scale. Regulatory and economic uncertainties are causing delays in investment, compounded by geopolitical unrest that disrupts trade and increases costs.
Although the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) net-zero ambition for 2050 offers strategic direction, insufficient incentives and unclear future pathways are stalling progress. Safe Bulkers has committed to two methanol-capable vessels for delivery by 2027, but a clear regulatory framework is essential for broader adoption. The upcoming IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting will be crucial for addressing unresolved issues regarding cost distribution and regulatory fund management.
