SAS Report Warns of e-SAF Shortfall Threatening European Aviation
SAS highlights a potential crisis in the aviation sector due to insufficient sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) supply in Europe. Without immediate investment and infrastructure development, the industry may face increased fares and reduced connectivity by 2030.

The SAS Aviation Insights report indicates that Europe is facing a significant shortfall in sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) as the 2030 mandate approaches. Demand for e-SAF is projected to reach 36,000 tons by 2030 in Scandinavian aviation, escalating to over 330,000 tons by 2040.
Currently, no European production facilities have achieved Final Investment Decision (FID), risking a structural shortage. Prices for e-SAF are expected to rise significantly, impacting operational costs for airlines and overall connectivity in Europe. Urgent actions are necessary to avoid a long-term imbalance in sustainable fuel production that could leave the sector vulnerable to market shocks.
