Australia Considers Converting Excess Wine into Biofuels Amid Supply Crisis
The Nationals urge the Albanese government to explore converting surplus wine into biofuels to address a fuel supply shortage. This initiative aims to alleviate pressure on the $51.3 billion wine industry facing a crisis due to oversupply and reduced consumption.

The Australian Nationals have proposed converting excess wine into ethanol to mitigate a potential fuel supply shortage. As of December 2025, Wine Australia reported a surplus of approximately 262 million liters.
Biofuels are being examined as a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels, with companies like Jet Zero and Lanza Jet collaborating on a sustainable aviation fuel project. Concerns about the wine industry's viability have been raised, with calls for further studies on repurposing surplus wine for fuel.
The wine sector is under significant stress due to a reduction in domestic consumption and the impact of previous tariffs from China. The ongoing global energy crisis, exacerbated by geopolitical conflicts, further complicates the situation.
