Saskatchewan Graduate Explores Biofuel from Lake Algae

Denhyn Holowatuk, a graduate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, is testing methods to convert unwanted algae from southern Saskatchewan lakes into ethanol. His research, which builds on a previous capstone project aimed at organic fertilizers, is supported by Graeme Drysdale, a research chair at Sask.
Polytech. They are assessing the economic feasibility and sustainability of this biofuel initiative. Holowatuk is currently accumulating seaweed for ongoing research during winter and plans to acquire advanced collection equipment. Similar efforts in Mexico aim to process significant quantities of seaweed into biofuel, indicating a growing interest in algae as a renewable energy source.
