SAYA and AGAMA Biogas Launch Integrated Programme for Schools in South Africa
The partnership between SAYA and AGAMA Biogas aims to enhance food security and economic sustainability in South African schools through biogas systems. This initiative addresses organic waste recycling and promotes youth employment while providing educational opportunities.

The South African Youth in Arts (SAYA) has collaborated with AGAMA Biogas to implement a biogas programme at Skeen Primary School in Sandton. This initiative focuses on converting food waste from school feeding schemes into biogas, which will power kitchen stoves, while the remaining digestate serves as organic fertilizer for food gardens. The AGAMA BiogasPro 6 digester is specifically designed for small-scale operations, enabling efficient conversion of organic matter into biogas and a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer.
The project generates significant economic value, with potential thermal equivalent savings of around R78,000 from LPG, and additional benefits from vegetable production and rainwater harvesting. The return on investment is estimated at three-and-a-half years, aligning with infrastructure project norms. Employing local youth for installation and maintenance fosters skill development, contributing to job creation and community involvement.
This model has been validated through 38 successful installations, providing a sustainable solution to food security and energy needs in schools, while also addressing historical nutrient deficiencies in local soils.
