SCI Issues Tender for Six Methanol Dual Fuel Container Ships Valued at $360 Million
The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) has issued a tender to construct six methanol dual-fuel-ready container ships, valued at approximately $360 million. This initiative aims to bolster the local shipbuilding industry as part of broader government policies designed to enhance domestic maritime capabilities.

SCI's tender involves two firm and four optional feeder container ships, each with a capacity of 1,700 TEUs. Local shipyards will have a Right of First Refusal to match foreign bids. Bids must include a 'Shipyard Qualification Template' demonstrating infrastructure capabilities, certified by the Indian Register of Shipping or an IACS member.
If lacking experience in container carriers, Indian shipyards may partner with international firms that have delivered at least three compliant vessels in the past decade. The government's Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS) will support the commercial offers of local yards, which are incentivized to reduce cost disparities with foreign competitors.
This initiative aligns with India’s goal to rank among the top 10 in global shipbuilding by 2030. Recent governmental support includes a substantial financial package to enhance local shipbuilding capabilities.
