Scotland's Biomethane Expansion Could Create £10bn Value and 8,000 Jobs
An industry report suggests Scotland can generate £10 billion and 8,000 jobs through biomethane production expansion, leveraging existing organic waste. The potential to produce 19 TWh of biomethane by 2050 could meet 76% of the nation's gas demand.

Scotland has the capacity to produce 19 terawatt hours (TWh) of biomethane by 2050, which may satisfy approximately half of current gas demand. The Green Gas Taskforce's report estimates this expansion could create about 8,000 jobs and unlock £10 billion in economic value.
Currently, only 2.5% of organic farm waste is utilized for biomethane, indicating significant growth potential. This renewable gas can be integrated into the existing gas infrastructure without modifying appliances. The taskforce advocates for national biomethane targets to promote investment in production facilities, also highlighting the potential for farmers to gain new revenue streams.
