Scottish Water Launches Europe's First Siphon-Fed Hydropower System
Scottish Water Horizons has implemented Europe's inaugural siphon-fed hydropower system at Whiteadder Reservoir, generating 199kW. This innovative solution enhances reservoir compliance and supports net zero targets by offsetting energy demands at the Hungry Snout Pumping Station.

The siphon-fed hydropower system at Whiteadder Reservoir began construction in August 2023, delivering renewable electricity using a 199kW Ossberger Crossflow turbine. The project is expected to produce 820,000 kWh annually, offsetting 30% of energy demand for the Hungry Snout Pumping Station and reducing CO2 emissions by 111 tonnes.
A feasibility study highlighted the reservoir's 24m head height and flow variations as ideal for hydroelectric generation, although a redesign was necessary due to grid connection constraints. The innovative system improves reservoir drawdown capacity, fulfilling SEPA regulations without extensive infrastructure costs. With successful commissioning completed, Scottish Water aims to replicate this model across its assets to bolster sustainability efforts.
