Söderenergi Pauses BECCS Project at Igelsta CHP Plant Due to Financing Issues
Söderenergi AB has paused its bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project at the Igelsta CHP plant in Södertälje due to high risk exposure and insufficient financing. The project, which began assessments in 2020, will not proceed as key issues remain unresolved, particularly in the voluntary carbon credit market and Swedish support schemes. The utility will continue to monitor developments while focusing on energy-efficient solutions.

Söderenergi AB has decided to pause its bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project at the Igelsta biomass-fired CHP plant in Södertälje. The board cited excessive risk exposure and insufficient financing as reasons for the halt.
Since 2020, Söderenergi has evaluated the capture and storage of biogenic carbon dioxide from the plant. Despite entering an intense development phase, key issues remain unresolved, including slow progress in the Nordic voluntary carbon credit market and inadequate Swedish support. The decision means ongoing work will stop, though Söderenergi will monitor future developments and continue to prioritize energy-efficient solutions.
