Shelbyville Plan Commission Recommends Against Industrial Rezoning; POET Bioprocessing Announces $200M Expansion
The Shelbyville Plan Commission unanimously recommended against rezoning over 400 acres for a potential data center, with the Common Council set to review the matter on January 21. Meanwhile, POET Bioprocessing announced a $200 million expansion of its facility, which will double bioethanol production capacity and create 20 jobs, while also increasing local grain demand significantly. Additionally, Doug Warnecke will not seek reelection after 13 years on the Northwestern Consolidated Schools board and Shelby County Board of Commissioners, with Chris King and David Mohr competing for the North District Commissioner's seat.

The Shelbyville Plan Commission issued a unanimous unfavorable recommendation to the Common Council regarding the rezoning of over 400 acres to IG-General Industrial, linked to a potential data center development. The Common Council will consider this matter on January 21.
In a separate development, POET Bioprocessing announced a $200 million expansion of its Shelbyville facility, set to double bioethanol production capacity from 98 million to 193 million gallons. This project will add 20 jobs and increase local grain demand by 32 million bushels, resulting in $176 million in annual corn procurement spending.
Construction is scheduled from Q1 2026 to late 2027, aiming to support domestic markets and biofuel opportunities. Additionally, Doug Warnecke announced he will not seek reelection after 13 years on the Northwestern Consolidated Schools board and Shelby County Board of Commissioners, with candidates Chris King and David Mohr vying for the North District Commissioner's seat.
