Sitka's F/V Mirage Undergoes Hybrid Electric Conversion for Sustainable Fishing
The F/V Mirage in Sitka is being converted to a hybrid electric propulsion system as part of an initiative by the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association to enhance sustainability in the fishing industry. This project, which includes retrofitting three boats with battery-electric motors, aims to achieve up to 80% fuel savings for short trips by utilizing Sitka's hydropower for recharging. Further energy efficiency measures are being explored across Alaska's seafood sector, with additional conversions planned for vessels in Kodiak and Juneau.

The F/V Mirage in Sitka is being converted to a hybrid electric propulsion system as part of an initiative by the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association (ALFA) to promote clean energy in the fishing industry. The project aims to fit three boats with battery-electric motors, with sea trials expected by January 19.
The conversion follows a decade of research into improving fuel efficiency in Alaska's fishing fleet, initiated by ALFA in collaboration with the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation. The hybrid system will allow the Mirage to operate on diesel and switch to electric mode for low-speed fishing, utilizing Sitka's hydropower for recharging.
Expected fuel savings could reach up to 80% for short trips. ALFA is also exploring further energy efficiency measures across the Alaska seafood sector, supported by funding from the Department of Energy. Additional conversions are planned for other vessels in Kodiak and Juneau.
