Slovenia's Budget Deficit Increases to 2.5% of GDP for 2025
Slovenia's general government deficit reached 2.5% of GDP in 2025, driven by rising public spending and wage increases. The deficit is projected to widen further in 2026, influenced by increased defense expenditures.

In 2025, Slovenia's general government deficit escalated to 2.5% of GDP, totaling 1.75 billion euros (2.01 billion U.S. dollars), a significant rise from 0.9% in 2024. The central and local government subsectors both reported deficits, with the central government contributing the majority.
Key factors for the deficit increase included a 9.4% rise in public sector wages and heightened investments in defense and infrastructure. The government's 2026 budget anticipates the deficit growing to approximately 2.1 billion euros (2.4 billion dollars), or 2.9% of GDP, largely due to commitments to NATO. Slovenia's general government debt also increased to 46.3 billion euros (53.2 billion dollars) at the end of 2025.
