South Africa Leads Africa's Renewable Energy Transition with 50 TWh Generation in 2024

According to the Forvis Mazars report, South Africa generated over 50 TWh from renewable sources in 2024, becoming Africa's top producer. The breakdown includes hydroelectric at 10.1 TWh, solar at 8 TWh, wind at 9 TWh, and other renewables at 27.1 TWh.

The country's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) has influenced renewable policies continent-wide. Solar capacity in Africa grew by 25% in 2024, with South Africa leading Southern Africa.

The country is also emerging in green hydrogen and biofuels due to its solar and wind potential. Investments are being made in carbon capture, smart grids, and solar minigrids. South Africa is a significant supplier of critical minerals for the global energy transition.

The new Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act aims to enhance the investment climate for oil and gas. The report emphasizes the importance of continued investment in renewables and regulatory improvements for energy diversification and economic growth.
