South Dakota Establishes Defense Institute in Rapid City with $6 Million Investment
The South Dakota Defense Institute (SDDI) will be established in Rapid City with a $6 million investment from the Future Fund. This initiative aims to strengthen national security efforts and enhance economic growth in the state by connecting industry, education, and government sectors.

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden announced the establishment of the South Dakota Defense Institute (SDDI) in Rapid City, backed by a $6 million investment from the Future Fund. The initiative seeks to position national security as a major industry in the state, serving as a hub for collaboration among businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies.
The funding includes $5 million for SDDI's first five years of operation and $1 million to Elevate Rapid City for acquiring a building in the Innovation District. The institute will facilitate connections with federal defense agencies to assist local businesses in securing defense contracts.
With over 100 contractors already engaged in defense work in the state, this initiative is poised to enhance economic opportunities and support workforce development. The potential impact includes increased defense-related employment and a more coordinated approach to securing federal contracts.
