South Korea Launches Task Force for Next-Generation Power Semiconductors and SK Hynix Expands Fab Investment
South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has launched a task force for next-generation power semiconductors, aiming to increase technology self-reliance from 10% to 20% by 2030. The task force will finalize a development roadmap by H1 2026 and initiate large-scale R&D project planning by H2 2026.
SK Hynix announced a KRW 21.6 trillion (~USD 15 billion) investment for its Yongin fab to meet rising global demand driven by AI. This marks a cumulative investment of KRW 31 trillion (~USD 21.5 billion) for the facility. Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology are also expanding their semiconductor capacities, focusing on integrated production and geographic diversification, respectively.
