South Korea's Navy to Establish Nuclear-Powered Submarine Task Group Starting May 1
The South Korean Navy will initiate a Nuclear-Powered Submarine Promotion Task Group on May 1 to develop training systems and operational plans. This task force will focus on crew training, safety guidelines, and regulatory frameworks essential for future nuclear submarine operations.

The South Korean Navy plans to launch a Nuclear-Powered Submarine Promotion Task Group on May 1, staffed by approximately 30 personnel, to establish a framework for crew training and operational guidelines for future nuclear submarine operations. This initiative follows a recent summit between South Korea and the U.S., which has accelerated discussions on nuclear-powered submarines.
The group will formulate mid- to long-term plans that include education systems, maintenance protocols, and safety regulations. The Ministry of National Defense aims to finalize negotiations with the U.S. on nuclear fuel supply within two years, with a comprehensive plan for a Korean nuclear-powered submarine expected to be presented this year, emphasizing safety oversight and regulatory measures.
