The revised project includes city services on the first two floors, along with gym and theater renovations, but omits a library and leaves the third floor vacant. The council seeks to enhance the design and plans to send the project to a referendum. Previous proposals were deemed too expensive, with costs reaching $193.8 million.

The South Portland City Council has backed a revised plan for a civic center at the old Mahoney Middle School, projected to cost between $62 million and $68 million. This plan includes city services on the first two floors and renovations to the gym and theater, but excludes a library and leaves the third floor vacant.
The council decided to postpone discussions on police and fire station upgrades and asked the Mahoney Center Committee to improve the design while considering geothermal energy and additional spaces. The project will be sent to referendum, as previous estimates of $193.8 million were deemed too costly for voter approval.
