South Sudan-Uganda Power Interconnection Project to Boost Electricity Access and Trade
The South Sudan-Uganda Power Interconnection Project (SUPIP) will increase electricity access in South Sudan from 7% to 10% and lower energy costs. The project, coordinated by the Nile Basin Initiative, is financed by the African Development Fund, the European Union, and the governments involved.
It aims to connect South Sudan to the Eastern Africa Power Pool, allowing for affordable electricity imports from Uganda, addressing severe power deficits, and promoting regional integration. SUPIP includes a 300.5 km transmission line designed for 1,000 MW, new substations, and the installation of distribution lines for local connections, as well as initiatives for digital connectivity and institutional strengthening.
