Southampton University Develops Blockchain Drone for Tamper-Proof Flight Data Recording

SEMICONDUCTOR

Southampton University has developed a drone that employs a blockchain verification system to maintain a secure and tamper-proof audit trail of flight data. This system functions as a digital, distributed black box and allows network-wide verification of recorded data, which is stored locally and is resistant to alteration.

Collaborating with industry partners such as Arm and Siemens, the project integrates academic research with expertise in distributed systems and semiconductor design. The drone was selected for testing due to the demanding conditions of flight, which challenge onboard computing systems, yet the verification system remained fully operational throughout the mission.
