Southern Company Reports Strong Q1 Retail Electricity Sales Driven by Data Center Demand
Southern Company experienced a 2.3% increase in retail electricity sales in Q1 2026, largely attributed to a 42% rise in electricity consumption by data centers. The company is expanding its capacity to meet growing demands, with significant investments underway in renewable and thermal generation.

In Q1 2026, Southern Company reported a 2.3% year-over-year increase in retail electricity sales, driven primarily by a 42% surge in data center consumption. The company has 28 large load projects contracted, totaling 11 GW, and is working on an additional 6 GW with prospective customers.
Georgia Power, Southern's largest subsidiary, has increased its capital spending from $1.6 billion to over $2 billion. Southern is also finalizing a $26.5 billion loan with the Department of Energy for 16 GW of power enhancements, which include new gas generation and nuclear improvements.
The company is enhancing gas generation with an additional 400 MW planned at a cost of $700 million, expected to be operational by 2029-2031. The investment in generation capacity reflects a strategic response to rising energy demands, indicating a strong market opportunity.
