Southsea Beach Redevelopment: £185 Million Coastal Defense Project
The Southsea Coastal Scheme in Portsmouth aims to enhance flood defenses and double beach size with a £185 million investment. The project is significant for protecting local homes and businesses from coastal flooding while improving tourism infrastructure.

The Southsea Coastal Scheme, a £185 million initiative, has doubled the size of Southsea beach through extensive redevelopment that includes improved flood defenses. The project involves a 2.7-mile stretch of the seafront and is recognized as the UK's largest local authority-led coastal defense effort, with completion expected by 2029.
Construction began in October 2025 and will continue until May 2027, utilizing one million tonnes of dredged shingle to enhance the beach's capacity for absorbing wave energy. Access to sections of the beach has been restricted during construction, yet local businesses are expected to remain operational. The scheme also includes a new seawall, bridges, and enhancements to the promenade with raised levels and additional seating.
