SSAB to Build Electric Steel Plant in Luleå, Sweden for Green Steel Production by 2030
SSAB is set to construct an electric steel plant in Luleå, Sweden, aimed at achieving fossil fuel-free steel production by 2030. The transition from coal-fired blast furnaces to an electric arc furnace represents a €4.5 billion investment, supported by €71 million from the EU's Just Transition Fund, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions in Sweden by 7%. The company will also train its 1,100 employees in the necessary skills for the new facility.

SSAB, Sweden's leading steel mill, is transitioning to fossil fuel-free steel production at its Luleå facility. The company plans to replace traditional coal-fired blast furnaces with a compact electric steelworks using an electric arc furnace.
This change, initiated in 2023, aims to produce green steel by 2030, contributing to a 7% reduction in CO2 emissions in Sweden. The transition is estimated to cost €4.5 billion, with €71 million in support from the EU's Just Transition Fund.
SSAB currently produces about 6,500 tonnes of steel daily and will begin training its 1,100 employees in new skills required for the electric plant. Sweden aims for carbon neutrality by 2045, five years ahead of the EU's target for 2050.
