SSEN Explores Braewick for Second HVDC Cable Landfall Site
SSEN Transmission is initiating marine surveys near Braewick to evaluate it as a potential landfall for a second HVDC cable, aimed at enhancing Shetland's energy capacity. This development is crucial for linking new energy projects to the national grid and bolstering local economic growth.

SSEN Transmission is set to conduct marine surveys near Braewick, Shetland, to assess its viability as a landfall site for a second high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. The proposed Shetland 2 HVDC cable, with a capacity of 1.8GW, aims to connect to a new northern substation hub, following the existing 600MW cable that links the Viking wind farm to the national grid.
Construction for the new cable is projected to begin post-2028, with operations expected by 2035. The initiative is anticipated to significantly enhance energy security and stimulate local economic growth through job creation and supply chain support. However, the installation of new overhead lines has raised community concerns, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement moving forward.
