St Vincent Government Considers Capping Geothermal Wells Due to Safety Concerns
Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday announced in the 2026 Budget address that geothermal wells in northern St Vincent are emitting steam and gases, posing potential public safety and environmental risks. The SVG Geothermal Project, initiated in 2019 in partnership with Reykjavik Geothermal, aims to extract 15 megawatts of energy from wells at La Soufrière volcano.

Geothermal wells in northern St Vincent, part of the SVG Geothermal Project established in 2019, are reportedly emitting steam and gases, raising safety and environmental concerns according to Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday during his Budget address on February 9, 2026.
The project, developed with Reykjavik Geothermal, intends to extract 15 megawatts of geothermal energy from wells located on the slopes of La Soufrière volcano. The government is now considering capping these wells to mitigate risks.
