Sweden Targets 10 TWh Biogas Production by 2030 for Energy Security
To enhance energy security, Sweden aims to increase biogas production to 10 TWh by 2030, addressing industry demand. The urgency is highlighted by geopolitical tensions and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Sweden's government has set a goal to boost biogas production to 10 TWh by 2030, aligning with EU objectives amid rising energy security concerns. Current projections estimate biogas demand will reach about 20 TWh, with half expected from the industrial sector.
The government's inaction, despite the urgency indicated by the war in Iran, is notable as biogas is critical for various industries, including chemicals and steel production. To achieve the target, the government needs to address low production rates and inadequate economic incentives that hinder the transition from fossil fuels.
Immediate actions should include adopting the production goal, enhancing investment security, and introducing a Contract for Difference to support biogas utilization in industrial processes. Without prompt measures, Sweden risks falling behind in energy independence and industry competitiveness.
