Switzerland's Federal Council Recommends Rejection of Nuclear Weapons Ban Initiative
The Federal Council of Switzerland has advised against the Nuclear Weapons Ban Initiative aimed at joining the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, citing potential negative implications for national security. The council emphasizes its commitment to nuclear disarmament through existing frameworks like the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

On April 1, 2026, Switzerland's Federal Council recommended the rejection of the Nuclear Weapons Ban Initiative without a counter-proposal. The initiative, submitted in December 2025 with over 105,000 signatures, seeks constitutional commitment to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
The Federal Council argues that accession would be largely symbolic and could harm security cooperation with key partners, as none of the nuclear-armed states support the TPNW. The council favors the NPT, which has been effective since 1970 in promoting disarmament and is backed by 190 states. Switzerland remains an observer in TPNW discussions while prioritizing risk reduction and transparency in nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
