The U.S. Army Europe and Africa will lead Sword 26, a multinational exercise series from late April to May 2026, involving U.S. and NATO forces across the High North, Baltic region, and Poland. This initiative seeks to implement NATO's Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative (EFDI), demonstrating a commitment to collective defense while testing advanced technologies such as AI-enabled command and control and counter-drone systems.
Sword 26 consists of three integrated exercises: Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. These exercises reflect NATO's transformation and emphasize the importance of defense spending, which is set at 5%. The outcomes may influence future joint operational capabilities and readiness in the region.
