Taiwan Enhances Military Readiness Amid Rising Chinese Threats
Taiwan's government is escalating military spending and civil defense initiatives in response to increased Chinese military pressure. National Security Council officials assert that Taiwan's preparations are essential for deterrence, not provocation, as China amplifies its maritime deployments.

Taiwan's government has intensified military spending and civil defense measures amid heightened Chinese military threats, with a significant backlog in U.S. arms sales complicating the situation. National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Lin Fei-fan emphasized that Taiwan's actions are defensive, countering China's military aggression, which includes deploying over 110 naval vessels in the region.
The arms backlog is currently estimated at $29.7 billion, with average annual deliveries between $4 billion and $5 billion. Delays in arms procurement may weaken Taiwan's defensive capabilities and embolden China. Immediate action is needed to improve industrial capacity and streamline the arms sales process to ensure timely delivery of military systems.
