Taiwan President Calls for Enhanced Defence and AI Cooperation with Europe
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te advocates for stronger defence and AI collaboration with Europe, aiming to fortify Taiwan against potential Chinese aggression. In his first international interview since taking office in 2024, Lai emphasized support for Taiwanese semiconductor companies investing abroad. Taiwan is increasing military spending and building its defence industry amid concerns over US commitment to Taiwan's protection. Lai also highlighted the importance of Taiwan's semiconductor sector in the global supply chain and its necessity for joint development with Europe.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has urged for increased defence and AI cooperation with Europe to enhance Taiwan's security against China. In a recent interview, he noted Taiwan's support for its semiconductor companies investing overseas, particularly in Europe, as the island strengthens economic ties with its third-largest export market amidst uncertainties about US defence commitments.
Lai emphasized Taiwan's military expansion and the need for its semiconductor industry to maintain research and production capabilities. He also acknowledged the ongoing war in Ukraine as a lesson for Taiwan's defence planning, expressing solidarity with Ukraine.
